We tailor our field trips to meet your specific classroom goals and can handle groups up to 48. Trips include the one hour boat to Big Charity Island and back, with instruction on GPS by Licensed Captain while underway.
Upon arrival the following 1 1/2 to 2 hour programs are available to choose from and each can be structured to accomodate the classroom's needs:
Total Trip Time 6 - 7 hours Base Price $29.00 per student
Students bring bag lunch (meal).
1. Wilderness Skills of Our Ancestors by Jim Miller and Includes a hands on session of ‘’Fire by Friction”
Outdoorsman and writer Jim Miller is one of the nation's leading advocates of the study and application of traditional skills and crafts including flintknapping. The Michigan native discovered the beauty and essence of the natural world at an early age and has spent countless hours studying the skills of our ancestors in woods, fields and streams throughout the Great Lakes region. 2. Useful Wild Plants Jim Miller's personal study of early American skills and wild edible plants assures you of an exciting and educational demonstration that will not be forgotten. Pre-school through College level programs are available and very successful. Our calendar of events fills quickly!
3. Basic Seamanship Skills course that includes instruction on how to plot a course using a nautical chart, compass rose, and parallel ruler. “How to” lesson on tying common and very useful nautical knots.
4. Great Lakes Lighthouse History course designed to provide basic understanding of the important role these grand navigation aids played in our nations history when the Great Lakes were the super highways of the nation.
5. Saginaw Bay Fishery History from traditional canoe, spear and net construction of the earliest native american inhabitants to the islands role in commercial fishing to the advent of Michigan's sports fishery.
